Why Small Stuff Matters In Kitchen Cabinet Designs

There is something to be said for a well organized kitchen.  I'm amazed at how little importance is sometimes given in new construction to the functionality of a kitchen.  I remember when building our home, what the male design guys considered and organized and functional kitchen.  Oh, my, I thought, how amazing it was that people who are experts in building could be so clueless when it came to kitchens.  They had great ideas about how large or small certain areas of the kitchen were, but the small things like kitchen cabinet organizers were, I guess, something they just didn't think about.  It was more about the big picture.  Oh, well, I guess that's what the cooks in the family are for.

I'm thankful that my husband also enjoys some time in the kitchen.  He loves to make his Sunday morning brunch special for all of us and I'm banned from the kitchen on that morning.  Because of his experience in the kitchen, he had great ideas for organization and functionality in the kitchen and paid special attention to the smaller details that would make our kitchen a pleasant place to be no matter who was doing the work.  Kitchen cabinet organizers were an important addition to our kitchen.

A few of those simple niceties were built-in space saving cabinets into which we could slide our free standing microwave and fridge.  This helped us avoid having to replace our fairly new refrigerator and microwave with appliances that went better with the decor and kept them out of the way of counter space.  Something as simple as a lazy suzan in corner cupboards and pull out shelves for the pots and pans aren't really considered, but once you have them, going back to conventional shelving is never the same.  Drawer organizers for your large utensils and sharp objects are also helpful.

Another small but important addition to kitchen organization are accessories like knobs for your cabinet doors and drawers.  In less expensive homes, these tiny treasures are left out.  After all, you can open most cabinet doors without them.  If this is the case in your home, these accessories can be picked up at a local home or hardware store and depending on the type you choose, can be an inexpensive but handy addition to your kitchen.

I guess the point is to take the small things into consideration when designing or redesigning your kitchen.  It will make all the difference in the world.
